A town of Inca origin 28 km north of Cusco via a paved highway that climbs to 3762m. The town is guarded by the snowy peak of Chicón. Its Plaza de Armas has an enormous Inca wall with ten large trapezoidal niches in perfect condition, and one of the most important Colonial- era churches of Cusco with Baroque altars and walls with richly painted scenes.
Every Sunday takes place a fair that draws countryfolk once a week from all corners and heights of the valley to exchange their products.
Composed of a series of concentric agricultural terraces, some as deep as 150m. This is thought to have been a large agricultural laboratory where the Incas were able to create different microclimates to grow a large variety of crops.
Maras salt mines
From the Inca era and still worked today. The salt water is piped from the mountain until 3000 artificial ponds where it evaporates with the sun. Workers still maintain the techniques used by their Inca ancestors.
